[conversa + cantina] Autonomous Kitchen Council: Organising for Care & Revolution

Juntem-se a nós para uma roda de conversa em torno de lutas de resistência localizadas, os seus desafios, e formas de nos conectarmos com a terra e os espaços urbanos que criamos, partilhamos, habitamos e amamos em Lisboa, através de uma introdução aos quatro princípios do Autonomous Kitchen Council (AKC). Venham cedo para fazermos em conjunto gorditas de milho.

CONTEXTO: Em 2021, no que hoje se chama  'Atlanta, GA, EUA', juntou-se um grupo principalmente composto de jovens abolicionistas e ambientalistas para resistir à construção de "Cop City", um complexo militarizado para treino policial. Para tal, mudaram-se para a Floresta de Weelaunee, sul de Atlanta, no inverno de 2021, fazendo frente com os seus corpos à destruição ecológica e à militarização policial. Em 2023 foram removides à força. Muitas dessas pessoas - indígenas e migrantes, identificando-se como mulheres trans - continuaram a cuidar umas das outras, mesmo na diáspora, bem como continuar as conversas importantes que se iniciaram na Floresta de Weelaunee.

Deste processo de 4 anos, emergiu um conjunto de princípios com raízes na sobrevivência do quotidiano: uma tentativa de criar autonomia partindo da base, conjugando o cuidado comunitário com ações e projetos revolucionários. Do culminar destes processos surgiu o Autonomous Kitchen Council (Núcleos de Cozinha Autónoma), um modelo cultural e de organização, e uma ferramenta para todas as comunidades que defendem e celebram Abundância pelo mundo.

Uma coisa é certa: a autonomia é impossível sem os meios para a ter, sem os recursos e estruturas para o cuidado em comunidade, e sem ser a comunidade a cultivar, colher, recolher, processar, distribuir, cozinhar ou partilhar comida. Ela não existe sem a defesa dos nossos espaços e bairros contra a gentrificação e violência policial. Não existe libertação sem a terra e sem a criação de espaços autónomos. A Abundância existe, mas precisa ser reconhecida, celebrada, e, cada vez mais, defendida colectivamente; isto nos mostram as defensoras de Weelaunee.

Ao incorporarmos os 4 princípios dos Núcleos de Cozinha Autónoma na luta quotidiana contra o fascismo, capitalismo e escassez de recursos, estamos a retomar os meios de sobrevivermos e alimentarmo-nos, bem após o colapso dos sistemas que nos rodeiam. Estamos juntes a criar uma nova economia de relações, fundada na conexão/reconexão com os nossos espaços de cuidado, bairros e terras.

Collective cooking for care + conversation and open dinner

Join us for a round of conversation around the local resistance struggles, their challenges, and ways of connecting deeper with the land & urban spaces we create, share, inhabit & love in Lisbon, through an introduction to the four principles of the Autonomous Kitchen Council (AKC). Come early to kick off the talk as we make corn gorditas in a follow-up to last year’s visit by Abundia, a participant in Stop CopCity movement and defendant of the Weelaunee Forest in so called Atlanta.

BACKGROUND: In 2021, in so-called Atlanta, GA, USA, a group of mainly environmentalists and abolitionists young people began resisting the construction of “Cop City”, a militarized police training facility by moving themselves to live in the Weelaunee Forest in south Atlanta in the winter of 2021 and putting their bodies against ecological destruction and police militarization. By 2023, they were forcibly removed. Some of them—Indigenous & migrant identified trans women—continued caring for each other and carried on important conversations in the diaspora that were started at the Weelaunee Forest.

Out of this 4 years process emerged a set of principles rooted in everyday survival: trying to build autonomy from the ground up by balancing community care with revolutionary broad actions and projects. The culmination of these processes of nourishment & recipes of collective creation is called the Autonomous Kitchen Council, an organizing & cultural model, a tool for all communities defending and celebrating Abundance worldwide.

One lesson rings clear: autonomy is impossible without the means for it, without the resources and structures for collective community care; without collective growing, harvesting, foraging, processing, distributing or cooking and sharing food. Without the defense of our spaces and neighborhoods from gentrification and police violence. There is no liberation without land& without autonomous spaces' creation and defense. As the Weelaunee defenders teach us—Abundance exists, but it must be recognized, celebrated and nowadays, increasingly, defended collectively.

By incorporating the four principles of the Autonomous Kitchen Council in the collective day-to-day struggles against the rising challenges of fascism, capitalism and resource scarcity, we are reclaiming the means to survive and nourish each other beyond the systems that are collapsing around us. We are together creating a new economy of relations based in connection/ reconnection to our spaces of care, neighborhoods and lands.
